Manila Chinese Cemetery

We offer you a hearty welcome to the second oldest cemetery in the city of Manila – the Manila Chinese Cemetery. After the La Loma Cemetery in Manila, this Chinese cemetery in Manila stands as the second oldest one in the city. The Manila Chinese Cemetery was made as the final resting place for those Chinese citizens who were denied burial During the Spanish colonial period in the Catholic Cemeteries of the city. This cemetery witnessed several executions during the period of World War II. Among these executions were the literary geniuses Manuel Arguilla and Rafael Roces, Girl Scouts organizer Josefa Llanes Escoda, Chinese Consul General Yang Guangsheng, and star athlete-turned-guerrilla spy Virgilio Lobregat. Apolinario Mabini also got his final resting bed in his cemetery before his remains were further transferred to Batangas.

There are many landmarks in Manila Chinese Cemetery that are of utter importance. The landmarks are given below:
  • Liat See Tong (Martyrs Hall): This hall was built in the early 1950s to honor those Chinese community leaders who were executed by the Japanese during the World War II period. When Japan invaded the country in 1941, one of the first things they did was to gather popular Chinese community leaders and execute them.
  • Chong Hock Tong Temple: This is the oldest Chinese temple in Manila that was built in the 1850s. Though this temple is not so elaborately designed, still its architecture reminds those Fujian provinces along with the ones in Malaysia and Singapore with their colorful materials and exquisitely upturned eaves.
  • Carlos Palanca (Tan Quien Sien) Memorial: This is a memorial to Don Carlos Palanca (Tan Quien Sien), who was a famous Chinese-Filipino businessman and leader during the 19th century. It was his efforts that led to the construction of the Manila Chinese Cemetery.

The other landmarks in this cemetery are: Dy Hoc Khe, and the Ruby Tower Memorial. There are burials in this cemetery that are the resting places of many notable peoples.
